WKMG Local 6 News goes 16:9

UPDATED: With little fanfare, WKMG has thrown the switch on 16:9 for its newscasts. (Oops -- I reported early that Local 6 had gone to HD. Not the case, however.)

Local 6 is using 16:9 studio cameras, but its weather graphics and most field reports are still in standard 4:3 with "wings" on the side of the screen. I believe there was at least one 16:9 report tonight -- some highlights from the Magic's game.

The 16:9 switch comes after WKMG has been stretching its picture to fill the 16:9 ratio of today's HD televisions. That was a bit annoying and also stretched out the anchors' faces, making them look like the reflections in one of those old carnival funhouse mirrors.

WFTV was the first in Florida to switch to HD for its newscasts in July 2006, and WESH followed with its HD newscasts on Nov. 1, 2007. Now in O-Town, only WKMG and is Fox O&O WOFL-Channel 35 are not in HD.

Nice to see you posting Roger. You have been missed!

Roger, where have you been. I almost gave up on this website. Some burning questions? What is going on with WKMG weather team? What happened to Michele Cimino?

check your facts roger. wkmg is not broadcasting in hd. the station is broadcasting in 16:9.

WKMG newscasts are NOT HD, they are just now brodcasting in 16:9 (widescreen) format (yes including studio cameras), there is a MAJOR difference! This is why they have not mentioned it at all, even on their website. News stations don't convent to HD without making a BIG DEAL out of it. It's a whole lot better then stretched 4:3 but HD it is NOT.

Either way, I don't know how much you'd tout HD now...I mean, if you're not the first to go HD who really cares if you're 2nd, 3rd or 4th. You don't gain viewers by promoting that you're HD anymore...WESH's ratings prove that point.

i have a brighthouse HD DVR on a SD tv (cuz its free for me) and now the SD channel gets logos and graphics cut off and looks rather odd at times. So i have watch them on the hd channel to even see them correctly. Anyone else have that issue?

I miss Gerald Resnick. I heard he was forced to leave because of his eye disease, is this true and why couldn't he still report? He was the best Anchor /Reporter I've seen in a long time, I hope he can make it back on camera somewhere, where he is appreciated. I would hope that someone could help find a way to help him do what he seemed to love to do. It was always obvious that he had a lot of talent.

First...Michele Cimino's contract was over and the station decided to not re-new it. "The station is going in a new direction"
Second...Gerald Resnick ended up going totally blind. You can't do a Reporter/Anchor position without being able to see, for obvious reasons.

I noticed wkmg has added new anchor and reduced bob frier's air time. The new guy has no chemistry with Jackie London and Bob needs to be back in that chair. He is the reason I watch.

I noticed that too, Bob Frier should be the only and main anchor in the evening. I have lived in Orlando for over 25 years and he adds more to a news cast than any other anchor I have watched. Put him back full time management!!
